The TRNC Foreign Ministry’s statement highlighted “the EP’s continued biased approach towards Cyprus”.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is not internationally recognized, has released a statement in response to the European Parliament’s (EP) 2022 Turkey Report.

The TRNC Foreign Ministry’s statement highlighted “the EP’s continued biased approach towards Cyprus, similar to its position in the past”. According to the TRNC, the adopted report skews far from the actual situation on the island, disregarding the existence and intrinsic rights of the Turkish Cypriot community and predominantly echoing the perspective of the Greek Cypriot side.

TRNC Foreign Ministry firmly expressed that as long as the EP persists in this perceived partial stance, its reports and resolutions hold no value. The ministry criticized the report’s endorsement of the federation model, which TRNC believes has failed previously. The report’s inclination to blame Turkey rather than hold the Greek Cypriot leadership accountable for the breakdown of the last negotiation process in Crans-Montana is a clear testament to the EP’s disconnect from island realities and its overtly pro-Greek stance.

The European Union's biased behavior is creating obstacles for negotiations, pretending to show intra-member solidarity. TRNC believes EU's favoritism for Greek Cypriots makes settling the issue on the island complex.

The statement also touched upon the construction of the Pyla (Pile) - Arsos (Yigitler) road, expressing the Turkish Cypriot side’s discontent with the EP’s position on this matter, reminding that similar projects initiated by the Greek Cypriot side have been overlooked by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and the United Nations Security Council in the past.

The TRNC Foreign Ministry says that they own Varosha (Maras) and have the right to govern it.
