Turkey sends hundreds of heavy machine guns to Ukraine
According to a recent report by Middle East Eye writer Ragip Soylu, Turkey has supplied Ukraine with hundreds of heavy machine guns to support its defense against Russia.
According to sources, Turkey has delivered over 600 Canik M2 heavy machine guns to Ukraine in recent months, and more are slated to come.
The weapons from Turkish arms producer Canik complement drones, missiles, gear, and vehicles Turkey has already provided Kyiv since Russia's invasion began.
The machine guns can be used by ground forces or mounted on armored vehicles. Multiple contracts were signed in March.
Experts estimate each gun costs $15,000-$20,000, valuing the shipment above $10 million. Ukraine has showcased the Turkish weapons in inspections.
The guns are helpful against Russian drones targeting Ukraine's infrastructure. Regional power Iran supplies those drones to Russia while denying it.
Sources say the Canik machine guns can be mounted on Turkish Kirpi armored cars previously delivered to boost Ukraine's capabilities.
While not game-changing, sources say every bit of firepower assists Ukraine's defense. Turkey has walked a careful line between Russia and Ukraine while supplying arms.
The new heavy machine guns represent Turkey's deepening support for Ukraine against Russia's invasion. Ankara continues providing military aid that Kyiv sees as crucial.
