The party criticizes civilian targeting amid Gaza offensive.

A left-wing Turkish political party has condemned Israeli oppression and Hamas attacks on civilians amid the latest eruption of violence between the two sides.

In a statement Saturday, reported by the Birgun, the Left Party (Sol Parti) said the Palestinian people's resistance against decades of suffering at the hands of Israel is legitimate. However, the Marxist group also criticized Hamas for turning its weapons against civilian populations during its ongoing militant offensive dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.

"The legitimacy of the resistance does not mean supporting the targeting of civilian populations but comes from the necessity of defeating the pirate state of Israel so that the people of both countries will not be targeted again," the SOL statement read.

The party argued that American imperialism and Zionism are chiefly to blame for the current conflict, which has now spread from occupied Palestinian territories into Israel proper.

While asserting that Israel must withdraw from occupied lands and halt its military operations, the party also called on Hamas to stop attacking civilian targets.

"This conflict should not turn into a regional war," the statement urged, appealing for a peaceful resolution based on Palestinian independence.
