Producer price of onions surged over 600% in 2022
In an assessment report by the Union of Chambers of Agriculture of Turkey (TZOB,) onions have become the product which saw its producer price increase the most in 2022 with a record level of 603,3 %.
The President of TZOB Semsi Bayraktar said that all 42 products they observed during 2022 but the onions were the champion, both in the market and in the producing level. The price tag of onions in the market was raised to 314.6 throughout 2022.
The followers of onions in the market were lemons, granulated sugar and green onions with hikes 202.8 %, 164.5% and 163%, respectively.
The hike in producer prices was much worse, according to the report, with citrus fruits following onions. Mandarins, lemons and oranges saw their producer prices increase 528.4%, 208.4% and 204.3% respectively.
In 2022, the most important factor in the increase in producer prices was the increased production costs, Bayraktar said. There was an increase in inputs between 100 and 400 percent.
According to Bayraktar, due to hikes in the inputs, producers had to sell their products at a loss.
“In December, the difference between the produce price and market price of zucchinis became 274%. The difference in lettuce is 248.8% and spinach 213.3%” he said.
