"Turkey's current statements actually reflect its objective of acquiring political gains ahead of the elections," Homs deputy Ahmad al Sukkari has told +Gercek.

A Syrian politician who spoke to +Gercek's Berrak Gungor said that Turkish authorities seek only to "appear in the same picture with Syria" before the elections in Turkey.

Ahmad al Sukkari, Homs deputy in the People's Assembly of Syria, said that he does not think Damascus will be engaged in efforts for rapprochement with Turkey before the latter agrees to withdraw from occupied territories in Syria or at least makes some moves to show its good intent.

"What's expected of Turkey here is not only making statements but taking concrete steps in the field to show commitment," he said, adding:

"The outcome of those steps should be Turkey's withdrawal from Syrian soil. This is where Damascus stands (...) Turkey's current statements and steps actually reflect its objective of acquiring political gains ahead of the elections."

He continued:

"Many statements are coming from Turkey nowadays and these statements seem to be focused on a normalization with Syria. However, the real objective of the Turkish government is to appear in the same picture with Syria before the elections."
