Turkish security forces detained 106 people during a gathering in Istanbul’s Kadıkoy district for commemorating 33 students that were killed in an Islamic State (ISIS) attack in southeastern Suruc.

The Istanbul Governor’s office said in a statement on late Wednesday that the detentions were made due to resistance to the police forces who were trying to prevent the demonstration, banned by the authorities.

On July 20, 2015, 33 university students were killed by an ISIS attack, carried out by a suicide bomber from a Turkish sect of the Islamic State.

The students were gathered for a press statement before their planned trip to reconstruct the Syrian border town of Kobani.
