AKP mayor arrested over collapsed buildings
Police in Turkey's Antep province have arrested Okkes Kavak, the mayor of Nurdagi district, as part of the investigation into the destroyed buildings following the massive earthquakes in Turkey that killed nearly 45,000 people.
Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency reported that Kavak was arrested as part of the Islahiye Prosecutor General's Office investigation into buildings destroyed by the earthquakes in the district.
The case against Kavak is continuing in court.
Okkes Kavak was the owner of Kavak Construction, whose numerous buildings collapsed after the earthquakes. His brother Osman Kavak was also killed in one of these buildings, along with his wife and two children.
The mayor's business partner, Yusuf Kaya, was also arrested when he tried to go abroad.
Nurdagi Municipal Council member Yunus Kaya, owner of another construction company, was also arrested
Nurdagi is one of the most damaged districts in the Maras earthquakes.
