Bodies of Jewish community's leader and wife recovered by Israeli teams
The remains of a local Jewish community's leader and his wife were recovered from under the rubble in Turkey's southern city of Antioch by Israeli search and rescue teams, a lecturer at Israel's Tel Aviv University said on Thursday.
Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak informed of the deaths of Saul Cenudi, the leader of Antioch's Jewish community, and his wife Fortune Tuna Cenudi, on Twitter, saying that their remains were recovered by teams of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and ZAKA, Israel's network of emergency response volunteers.
He added:
"We have to admit that after their deaths, also considering the shape of the synagogue destroyed by the earthquake, the Jewish presence in Hatay that goes back 2,500 years has unfortunately come to an end. A phase of history has been closed. I'm sorry. So much."
