"It's easy going after the constructors, but what about the ones who publicly committed crimes and who are still on duty?" Selahattin Demirtas has said.

Imprisoned Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtas criticized the scapegoating in the wake of the earthquake on 6 February and said the prosecutors will be "complicit in the crime" in case they do not launch investigations at all levels involved.

In tweets on Sunday he said:

"Starting a hunt for constructors and saying 'We have caught the perpetrators, we are holding them accountable' actually means covering up the crime, concealing the criminals. It's obviously easy going after the constructors. What about the ones who publicly committed crimes and who are still on duty? You shall not cover up the true crime, conceal the true criminals!"

He continued:

"Who are the ones that are truly responsible for having turned the earthquake disaster into an earthquake massacre? Regardless of which political party they are affiliated with, former and current mayors, heads of construction offices, former and current provincial heads of the environment and urbanization administrations, officials of supervision companies, ministry inspectors, construction commissions of local administrations."

He added:

"Really, who are they? Former and current ministers of environment and urbanization, former and current ministers of the interior, former prime ministers, the President. The prosecutors who will not include these in their investigations will be complicit in the crime."
