Turkish Medical Union leader Sebnem Korur Fincanci said she will continue to she will continue struggle “to prevent all sorts of weapons, prohibit their use and eliminate them”

A top doctor who was released on Wednesday after being jailed for three months over her remarks on Turkish military’s chemical warfare allegations said “she would continue to speak the truth despite oppression and punishments”

The head of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) Sebnem Korur Fincanci was sentenced to more than 2 and a half years in prison, but the court ruled on her release, taking into account the time she was in detention.

Fincanci was welcomed by fellow doctors and rights defenders who chanted “Jin Jiyan Azadi” (Women, Labor, Freedom in Kurdish language) as she exited the prison gate in Turkish capital Ankara with her fist up in the air.

Speaking briefly to the journalists, Fincanci hailed their efforts to report on her despite crackdown by the government:

“From the very beginning, despite all the pressure, your efforts to report are really valuable. Of course, we also marked those who cannot speak up. As I said at the hearing today, fear doesn't do any good. Whatever we have seen, whatever the truth is, it should not be forgotten that you, who are fighting for human rights, have a responsibility to convey this to the public, just as it is the responsibility of physicians to tell the truth”

In an interview with Media Haber during a live broadcast on Oct.20, Fincanci had shared her examinations on the basis of the coverages posted in social media, showing PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) militants who allegedly suffered from chemical weapon attacks.

"Obviously, one of the toxic chemical gases was used that directly affects the nervous system." she said, and urged independent missions to investigate the incident within the scope of international treaties.

Speaking with flowers in her hand, Fincanci said she will continue to struggle against all sorts of weapons.

“We will do everything we can to prevent all types of weapons, prohibit their use and eliminate them,” she said.
