Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu said all of the questions he asked to the ministry of justice about the deaths in prisons left unanswered

73 inmates died in Turkish prisons between December 1, 2021 and December 1 2022, according to data piled by HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) deputy Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu.

“34 of these are suspicious deaths described as suicides. 39 of them are sick prisoners that died. Prisoners lose their lives due to the lack of adequate treatment opportunities, both physically and psychologically. This causes a lot of drama,” Gergerlioglu said in a video posted on Twitter.

Gergerlioglu said the ministry of justice has not responded to any of his questions over the matter in the national assembly.

“The data we have announced are based on information from relatives of the inmates, lawyers or through our own means. Prison administrations or the ministry of justice do not give any information. Prisons have become houses of death,” Gergerlioglu said.

Gergerlioglu also gave some examples:

“Umut Bulut, a 17 year old inmate suicided in prison 246 days ago, still no explanation from the ministry. If it was your child, would you stay silent?” Gergerlioglu asked on Twitter.

According to Gergerlioglu the condition in prisons are very bad and the number of sick prisoners who die may increase along with those who suicide with psychological reasons.
