Husband violates restraining order, kills wife in Turkey’s Mardin
A husband in Turkey's southeastern Mardin province in defiance of a restraining order, fatally shot his wife before attempting suicide, further contributing to the alarming number of cases of violence against women in Turkey.
A domestic dispute in the Koc hisar neighborhood of Kiziltepe district of Mardin took a deadly turn as Omer Durak (42) shot his wife, Semra Durak (36), before attempting to take his own life. The incident occurred in their home where the couple, who had four children, engaged in a heated argument that escalated into violence.
During the altercation, Omer Durak fired his weapon at Semra Durak, resulting in severe injuries to both. Emergency medical services rushed to the scene and transported the injured couple to Kiziltepe State Hospital. Tragically, Semra Durak succumbed to her injuries, while Omer Durak remains in critical condition.
According to information from the Dogan News Agency (DHA), Omer Durak had been subject to a restraining order, but police had recently released him after taking his statement, citing that he had violated the order.
This tragic incident adds to a distressing pattern of violence against women in Turkey. According to We Will Sp Femicide Platform, 29 women were killed by men, and 21 women were found suspiciously dead in August alone.
