Monthly report: 88 journalists behind bars in Turkey

Four more journalists have been jailed in Turkey in February raising the total number of journalists behind bars to 88, Dicle Firat Journalist Association said in its monthly report on Thursday.

According to the report published on the organization's website, in February seven journalists were attacked, 15 mistreated, 11 threatened, 24 blocked while reporting, one home was searched, eight taken into custody and four jailed.

14 investigations were opened against journalists, one journalist was sentenced to 11 months in prison, and proceedings continued against 102 journalists from 38 files, the report added.

The DFG report also included data on the fines imposed by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) for punishing opposing TVs.

Accordingly, 10 broadcasting bans, 4 TV stations were fined from in the upper limit, and one TV station darkened for three days.

Four websites were shut down, 19 of them were blocked, along with 345 social media accounts.

The report also said that 25 journalists died in the massive earthquakes that hit Turkey on Feb. 6.
