A high-ranking SDF officer identified as "Baran" was killed in a suspected Turkish drone attack in Qamishlo, Syria, one week after an earlier assassination attempt on the SDF commander Mazloum Abdi.

A suspected Turkish drone on Thursday night targeted a car in the city of Qamishlo in Northern Syria, killing a high-ranking officer of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and injuring another person, local sources said.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR,) the attack took place around 2:00 a.m., and the victim was identified as "Baran," a prominent leader of the SDF, a Kurdish-led military alliance that rules northern Syria and is fighting ISIS but is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey with alleged ties to the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party)

The identity of the injured person in the car remains unknown, and no statement has been released by the SDH regarding the attack.

This attack comes about a week after an assassination attempt on Mazloum Abdi, the commander of the SDF, who survived an attack by a suspected Turkish drone near Sulaymaniyah airport in Iraqi Kurdistan.

It is worth mentioning that this is the first targeting since February 22 of this year, when a Turkish drone attacked a civilian car on the road between Qamishli and al-Qahtaniya, northeast of Hasakah, killing a civilian and injuring a leader of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish,” SOHR said.

According to the SOHR, since the beginning of 2023 there have been 11 drone strikes in the region by Turkey, resulting in the deaths of 5 civilians, including a child and a woman, as well as 6 military personnel and a car driver. In addition, over 5 people have been wounded in these attacks. Most of the targets have been in Al-Hasakah, where 9 strikes have been carried out by Turkish drones, causing civilian casualties and injuries to military personnel.
