Terror investigation into explosion in Istanbul

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office started an investigation into the apartment explosion over suspicion of terrorism.

On Sunday, three people died in an apartment explosion in Kadikoy district of Istanbul. Although it was initially announced by authorities that it was a gas explosion, the Public Prosecutor of Istanbul started a terrorism investigation.

Following the explosion, the Governor of Istanbul Ali Yerlikaya said: “Unfortunately, three people lost their lives in the natural gas explosion in Fikirtepe, Kadikoy. The investigation continues in the building.”

Yerlikaya’s claims were dismissed by the Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, who said: “According to our initial findings, the explosion was not caused by natural gas.”

Murat Ongun, the press consultant of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality said that the natural gas distributor of Istanbul, IGDAS, announced that there is no gas connection in the apartment where the explosion happened.

On Monday, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office started an investigation over suspicion of terrorism.
