Turkey: One killed, party offices attacked during election victory celebrations
An opposition supporter was killed, another severely injured, and the offices of two opposition parties were subjected to attacks on late Sunday in different provinces of Turkey after the supporters of Recep Tayyip Erdogan took to the streets to celebrate Erdogan's runoff victory.
Erhan Kurt, a member of nationalist opposition Good Party, was fatally stabbed outside the party's offices in the Black Sea province of Ordu by an Erdogan supporter, following a dispute between Kurt and three Erdogan supporters.
The 17-year old suspect and the other two assailants were captured by the police and taken into custody. The suspect reportedly told the police that he stabbed Kurt when he insulted him.
In another incident in the Black Sea province of Giresun, the offices of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) were targeted in an attack in the district of Bulancak, causing material damage.
CHP deputy Elvan Isik Gezmis, the first woman deputy of Giresun, said in a tweet:
"We find it hard to understand what sort of victory has been celebrated in the country. The streets have been terrorized, there has been no safety of life left."
Referring to the deadly incident in neighboring Ordu, she added:
"Some were killed and some injured. The offices of our party in Bulancak were attacked. The windows were smashed. A poster of our Ata [Ataturk] was targeted and torn."
The offices of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in the western town of Inegol was also subjected to an attack. The assailants were supporters of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP), and material damage was inflicted, Mezopotamya News Agency said.
HDP's local official said that they will not be intimidated by such attacks.
In the Kurdish-majority district of Nusaybin, a man named Ahmet Akbulut and two others who reacted to a group firing rounds in the air during celebrations were attacked by the group, and Akbulut was severely injured. The victim may lose sight, local media reported.
